Trauma Management
Dental trauma is a complex process to manage in children, due to the many different individual factors i.e.
- age of the patient
- medical history
- tooth affected i.e. primary or permament
- access to care
- stage of development of the affected tooth i.e. immature tooth, or fully mature tooth
- stage of the child's growth and development
Our specialists have experience managing dental trauma in the many stages. Due to the complexity, we often work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to obtain the best long term outcome for children. This includes but is not limited to working with our patient's family dentist, endodontists, orthodontists and prosthodontists.
Treatment planning can be thought of in phases
- Emergency management
- Short term management
- Medium term management
- Long term - outcomes in adulthood
What to expect at an emergency trauma appointment?
As part of the initial assessment of the injury, aside from the clinical examination - it is standard for photographs and at least 2 intra-oral x-rays to be taken of the injury. The specialist needs to assess not only the tooth/teeth, but also the surrounding hard and soft tissues to correctly diagnose injuries present and plan appropriate treatment.
